The first burn sets the tone. Let the wax melt close to the edge of the vessel before you extinguish the candle; this helps avoid a tunnel forming around the wick.
Before each lighting, trim the wick to about 5 mm once the wax is cool. A shorter wick usually gives you a steadier flame and less soot.
Keep candles on a level, heat-safe surface away from draughts. Never leave a burning candle unattended, and stop using it when a small amount of wax remains at the bottom of the vessel.
